Life In The Emerald City EP

Brett Johnson

Freerange
FR085 | 2007-03-12
Freerange are very proud to welcome one of the true torchbearers of forward thinking Chicago style house for his first EP for the label. It's fair to say that Brett Johnson is pretty much a household name so we'll spare the biog spiel. In a nutshell he shot to fame with killer releases on Classic, Seasons, and Sneak's Magnetic label and went on to remix for the likes of Alexkid, Mark Farina and Soul Mekanik.

For his Freerange debut, Brett set the freakometer dial to 11 and pushed the Shake Yo Booty Now button so hard it broke off. Cuckoo is stripped back, heads down, Chicago house at it's very best. The groove starts, the bass line wobbles, the sample of Brett's mum will make you chuckle, then all too soon it's over. So Re-ee-ee-ee-wind! Very cheeky this one, and gets a large reaction on the dancefloor.

WeR1 sees Brett in far more serious mood, and with more than a hint of 80's synth nostalgia flowing through his fingers. Lush chimes, pads n FX sit on top of the chunky beats and bass creating a brilliantly original track which will stick in your head like a poisoned dart.

For the Cuckoo remix we thought we'd enlist the skillz of our favorite German deep housers MotorCitySoul. This Frankfurt based duo consisting of C-rock (who also runs the uber kool Stir15 label) and Matthias Vogt (mastermind behind the Re-Jazz project) are about to get a lot more recognition in the near future.

Finally, our very own Matt Masters provides a superdeep and mighty fine remix of WeR1 which sees him keep things simple, groovy and understated. This mix is a digital only exclusive and a real mood setter.

Make sure you get back to us with your thoughts so we can keep supplying you with this quality stuff.
