MORRA DEREY

Samora Bonga aka "Morra DeRey" grew up in a small town called Mthatha (Eastern Cape, RSA) with 2 sisters and 1 brother.

His love for music started at a very young age as his brother (Doctor) used to give him piano lessons at home. Morra then moved on to dancing at the age of 14 as he was part of a local dance group by the name OutLawz. He left his home town for Cape Town to study Information Technology in the Cape Technikon (now known as Cape Peninsula University of Technology).

In his first year of study he met a young dj by the name "Nice", who then introduced him to the digital world of making music by giving him his first ever Music Production Software(2004). With the help of his Cape Town friends he started Djing as a hobby which saw him play around the Mother City.

Through trial and error, Morra then formed his own sound which was influenced by B.O.P, Osunlade and Afefe Iku, Masters at Work, BuzzinFly, Revolution, Dennis Ferrer & Jerome Sydenham, Africanism All-stars, etc. with his music was being played around the country (RSA) it drew the attention of DJ Ganyani (Master G) who then gave him guidance and taught him all about the Local House Music Scene. At the time Morra also got assistance from a professional sound engineer by the name Sandi Ngoma who then polished his production skills. Morra and Ntsika Madalane (his friend) then formed a Production/DJ/Vocalist group called the Heavy Quarterz which was later joined by Matsoso Letuka who then added "DeRey" (meaning "The King") to Morra's name.

Morra then left the Heavy Quarters and moved to the city of Johannesburg to work as a Web Services Analyst at one of the biggest American Investment Banks based in Sandton (2008). After loosing his job in 2009, he then realized there was more to his talent than he is giving.

He then started making more Tribal/ Afro music which featured his friends the Heavy Quarters (at the time there were only vocalists left in the group). Morra DeRey's music caught the ear of one of his mentors, Mzee who asked him to join "the winning team" The A Team.

Morra worked hand in hand with the A Team to produce Mzee 's Album Tamanini, in which he produced one of the blazing hits in the album called "Embo" featuring Matsoso Letuka. Morra 's music does not only heal one's soul spiritually but blends the African sounds that rock the dance floors through out the world.

He now co-owns a record label with Yandisa Madondo called "O'Rei Recordings" with artists:
Mtheewami
Newtral,
Al Coda
Matsoso

he is now considered as one of the leading forces in the Soulful/Afro Deep/Afrotech House Music in South Africa and abroad.
