THERE is nothing that is going to stop South African man of the moment, Mzee, to reach for the sky. The Mahuwelele hit maker has joined forces with Nulu Music to drop his new offering The Ancestral Calling EP featuring his homeboy, Paledi Malatji, on vocals. Nulu music is a New York based record label owned by Anane Vega and Antonello Coghe. The Ancestral Calling EP is the seventh offering from the newly formed label that is fast becoming a household name. There is no doubt that 2009 is the year for Mzee, in February he released his critical acclaimed club anthem Mahuwelele Remixes EP via Ocha Records and caused havoc on the dance floors across the world. Making history in the music industry, the village boy from Bushbuckridge in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa, decided to release three different projects with three different labels in one month. First to hit the shelf was Mzee's new EP with Ocha Records, Umoja EP as a tribute to his friend and mentor Kampi Moto. Kampi Moto, who was from Katanga Province in the Democratic Republic of Congo, did the vocals for Mzee on this song but unfortunately passed away due to heart operation complications earlier this year. Umoja is Lingala - one of the languages from Democratic Republic of Congo - for Unity. The song was remixed by Boddhi Satva, Culoe De Song, Aero Manyelo and Mushroom Boys and it was well received my music lovers, hitting the number 3 spot on traxsource at some stage. The 12 tracks Umoja EP also included The flute song which was remixed by Nomumbah, Brazilian Soul Crew, DJ Cecil and Sbonza, who is one of Mzee's artists from his label, Bomba Records. And now Mzee is offering another monster EP - The Ancestral Calling featuring Malatji - deep afro house masterpieces that will make you understand why Mzee is one of the most talked about South African producers and musicians at the moment. The 9 songs EP featuring remixes by Boddhi Satva, who has been one of Mzee's mentors and confidant, Rancido - also known as Goodsoul - DJ DaSouL and Fabrizio Diglio as well as three of Mzee's other artists, Sbonza, Morra DeRey, Sculptured Music and a 15-year-old Jaso Moke. Nulu Music co-owner Antonello Coghe and his friend Filipe Narciso (AM Roots), also remixed the song. The song is an appeal for anybody not to ignore their ancestors but to respond positively to the calling. Mzee is not just a music producer but a modern African anthropologist who captures African history and different cultures through his music. His music is so deep and touches as well as embraces origins of different tribal music across the continent. Mzee is also releasing another album titled Tamanini with Soulcandi - one of South African record labels - with 31 songs this month. Who knows maybe music is Mzee's ancestral calling.
