Besides being one of the foremost voices of the Civil Rights Movement, the novelist, playwright and essayist James Baldwin was also a vocal advocate for the arts and artists, asserting that the works and very existence of the artist is vital to the survival of a society. Known for seminal writings such as Go Tell It On The Mountain, The Fire Next Time, Giovanni's Room, Another Country, Blues for Mister Charlie, Notes of a Native Son, and many others, Baldwin's legacy remains a testament to the complex psychology of African American men in hostile environments - only to survive the Diaspora.
